While Miguel’s mom and his older sister when to work, everyone else had chores to do around the house. Miguel’s job was to cook for the family.
Miguel came to the United States in 2005. His first job was at Burger King. He was on the assembly line putting together hamburgers that came down the belt. He worked for there for 6 months. Next, he decided to go to school to learn English and went to work at California Pizza Kitchen. He worked for CPK for 7 years, learning every job, doing training, and location openings. He started out working the Prudential Center location and opened many locations in Massachusetts and around the country.
Miguel decided he wanted a change, so he went to work at the Stadium in South Boston as the Kitchen Manager. He was there for about 4 years until the business closed.
Miguel came to work for Restaurant Associates in 2015. He started out part time as a cook in charge of omelets and pizza in the Grille on the weekends. He then moved to the back of the house, and recently began working in the bakery this past August.
Marcela, then girlfriend and now his wife, came from Colombia to be with Miguel. They were married in 2013. They have 2 children, a girl and a boy. Sophie was born in 2014 and Simon in 2016. Miguel works hard to make sure his family is secure and happy.
In 2017 Miguel’s uncle bought a restaurant in Hyde Park. It is called Las Delicias Colombianas. Miguel’s uncle asked him to be the manager. Miguel agreed, but wanted to make sure he was able to maintain his position with Restaurant Associates at Harvard Business School.
They had a deal. Fast forward to early 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic happened. Miguel stepped up and took over the business, kept things going and remained open during the pandemic. Later in 2020, his uncle came to him and proposed that Miguel take over the restaurant. As of January 2021, the restaurant is now owned by Miguel. He is in charge of food cost, payroll and all of his employees. He has some really good people that work for him that have been there for a long time. He trusts them to take care of the business when he is not there. Marcela and her sister help him with the business as well. When Miguel is not working here at HBS, he is at his restaurant.
Las Delicias Colombianas is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner and has become a neighborhood restaurant in the community, serving authentic Colombia food. Miguel is very proud to say he has passed all of his health inspections. He is grateful for everything that he has learned from R/A regarding safety and sanitation especially during pandemic to keep his restaurant open and safe.
